Hungary rejects Ukraine’s initiative, leaving Kyiv in a difficult position

Hungary has refused to join the “Carpathian Eight” initiative proposed by Ukraine.

TodayPress TV reports, citing Euronews, that Hungary rejected the proposal.

Speaking in parliament, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said that although his country had been invited to join the initiative, it had declined to participate “for substantial reasons.” He did not specify the reasons for the decision.

Magyar also said that Hungary would not allow the construction of an oil products storage facility for Ukraine on its territory. The project is planned under a memorandum of understanding signed between Hungarian company MOL and Ukraine’s Naftogaz.

The prime minister said the facility would be built neither on the Hungary-Ukraine border nor elsewhere in the country.

Magyar also stressed that he expected MOL’s management to conduct the company’s future activities in coordination with Hungary’s new government.

He added that Hungary would also veto Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union.
