Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk: The US Army’s main multi-purpose transport helicopter

The UH-60 Black Hawk is a medium-lift multi-purpose helicopter manufactured by the US company Sikorsky, now part of Lockheed Martin. It has served as the US Army’s main transport and combat-support helicopter since 1979.

History and development

The UH-60 project began in the early 1970s as a replacement for the UH-1 Huey helicopter. Sikorsky’s YUH-60A prototype made its first flight in 1974. It won the competition in 1976 and was officially adopted by the US Army in 1979.

Production began in the 1980s. The helicopter was widely used in the Gulf War and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In the 2000s, a modernization program was launched with the UH-60M variant. Production continues to this day.
