Kaya Kallas announces the death of her father, Siim Kallas

Siim Kallas, former Prime Minister of Estonia, former Vice-President of the European Commission and former head of the Estonian branch of the USSR Savings Bank, has died.

His daughter, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, announced his death on Facebook, TodayPress TV reports.

“It is with deep sadness that I have to announce that my beloved father passed away tonight,” the diplomat wrote.

The former politician died at the age of 77 on the night of August 21–22.

During the Soviet era, Siim Kallas was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1972 to 1990 and headed the Estonian branch of the USSR Savings Bank.

After Estonia regained political independence, Kallas served as Governor of the country’s central bank. In 1994, he founded the local Reform Party.

Siim Kallas served as Prime Minister of Estonia from 2002 to 2003 and as Vice-President of the European Commission from 2004 to 2014, serving in both European Commissions headed by José Manuel Barroso.

His daughter, Kaja Kallas, has served as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy since December 1, 2024.
