Russia would strike this NATO country first

Russia has openly indicated which military facilities in Norway it could target in a future conflict. The development further hardens Moscow’s rhetoric toward NATO at a time when the alliance is strengthening its northern flank and expanding its long-range capabilities in areas close to Russia.

TodayPress TV reports, citing Reuters, that Russia’s Foreign Ministry said facilities in Norway hosting US missile systems, as well as command and control centres associated with them, could become targets for Russia in the event of a military confrontation.

Moscow has specifically focused on the deployment of Mk-41 launchers in Norway, which can support the use of various missile systems. Norway, meanwhile, has strengthened its forces by increasing the number of artillery systems and other military assets in the northern part of the country.

Russia’s threat is viewed as part of a broader policy aimed at portraying NATO’s defensive military buildup as an escalation while simultaneously increasing military and hybrid pressure on European states.

Norway’s strategic importance has increased significantly in recent years due to its proximity to the Arctic and its geographic proximity to Russia’s key military infrastructure.

The issuance of explicit threats against NATO territory, rather than easing tensions, is strengthening calls for stronger deterrence measures, increased military preparedness across Europe and a more reliable military presence on the alliance’s northern flank.
