The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has removed Syria from the list of countries failing to comply with their obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

TodayPress TV reports that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi described the decision as a “historic breakthrough.”

The agency also confirmed that the facility in Syria destroyed in 2007 was a nuclear reactor under construction. It was reported that the fuel for the reactor was being produced in Syria itself.

According to the IAEA, years of investigations and inspections into Syria’s nuclear activities have clarified the matter.
