From footballers to coaches: Iraola and Simeone face each other again!

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has shared his thoughts ahead of the club’s UEFA Champions League league phase opener against Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish coach emphasized that the match is of particular significance to him.

“I think this is a special night for me. Everyone talks about the famous Champions League nights at Anfield, and in our first match we will face a strong opponent – Atletico. Simeone has done an incredible job as a head coach. It is truly impressive that throughout all these years, he has achieved the objectives set for each season. This is a serious test for us.

“I played against him when he was still a footballer. Then, when he became a coach, I played against his teams, and later I faced him myself as a coach. We have a rich history of competing against each other. There is no doubt that he has much more experience than I do in matches like these. However, I hope we can put up a worthy fight against him,” Iraola said.

It should be noted that the Liverpool–Atletico Madrid match, which will be played at Anfield, will kick off at 23:00 Baku time.
