The European Commission has proposed reforms that would abolish member states’ veto power in areas such as sanctions, enlargement and several other areas.

TodayPress TV reports that European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said this while presenting the draft reform at a session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

“We need to increase the number of areas where qualified majority voting is used so that, when EU rules allow, a single country can no longer block important decisions. This applies, for example, to sanctions, the fight against tax evasion and enlargement,” Kos emphasized.

The proposals have been formalized as a reform aimed at preparing for the accession of new member states and increasing the efficiency of the EU.
